Chicken Burgers Doused in Creamy Mushroom Sauce and Caramelized Onions


My flatmate and I were having a conversation about the best burgers we’ve ever eaten and she happened to mention this particular combination. When I told her that I had never tried this one out because i’ve never been a mushroom or a chicken burger person, she swore I had to try it and it would be the best burger I have ever had.

A part of me knew she was over emphasizing  but my curious palate really wanted a bite of this ‘best burger’ and last weekend we decided to assemble it.

When I first took a bite of this burger the only words I managed to get out were ‘Mmmmmm’. I loved the combination and for a homemade burger, this one was remarkable! I had to share this recipe. The creaminess of the mushroom sauce complimented the spicy chicken patty so well along with the caramelized onions which made the whole burger absolutely irresistible.


For the chicken Patty ( Makes 9 burgers):

  • 2 lbs minced chicken (~1kg)
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • 1 tbs black pepperpowder
  • 1 tbs paprika powder
  • 1 green chilly, chopped fine ( if you don’t want it spicy, you can avoid this one)
  • Half a cup coarse bread crumbs or a slice of bread crumbled
  • 1 tbs garlic powder
  • 1 tbs ginger garlic paste
  • 3-4 drops of lemon juice
  • 3-4 drops of olive oil
  • Salt to taste


For the creamy mushroom sauce:

  • 1 lb button mushrooms, chopped (~500 gms)
  • 6-7 cloves of garlic, diced
  • 2 tbs unsalted butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese ( I used the 4 cheese blend)
  • 1 tbs black pepper powder
  • 1 tbs oregano flakes


For the caramelized onions:

  • 2 large onions, sliced ( I used purple onions)
  • 1 tbs sugar
  • 2 tbs olive oil


Chicken Patty:

Combine all the ingredients for the chicken patty and mould the meat to make patties of equal size.

When you’re ready to assemble your burger, you can fry your patty with minimal oil on a non-stick pan.


For the mushroom sauce,

Melt the butter in a pan. Once heated, add the garlic. Once the garlic is golden brown, add your mushrooms and allow it to cook.

Pour in the cream.


Bring to boil and simmer. Then add the pepper and oregano flakes. Your creamy mushroom sauce is ready to be served.


For the caramelized onions,

In another thick bottomed pan, fill the base with olive oil. add the onions and the sugar. Stir occasionally and wait for it to caramelize.


I used store bought burger buns. Tossed them in the oven for 2 minutes to get them nice and crispy. You can also put them on a pan and toast them the way you like it.


And finally,

Assembling this burger,

add a little mushroom sauce on the bottom,

the patty in the center,

douce it with some more mushroom sauce,

top it with the caramelized onions,

and the warm bun on top!

The beauty about burgers, you can add whatever else you want to it!
